What does a project manager do?

Anyone working in a business knows that projects don’t always go to plan. Priorities change, deadlines move, unexpected problems crop up and, before long, keeping everyone motivated can be a challenge.

This is where a project manager is essential. Imperative for planning work and coordinating people to managing deadlines, they help turn an idea into a finished result with measurable outcomes.

But what does a project manager actually do day to day, and what makes them so important to a successful project?

Why project managers are important

Project managers set objectives, establish timelines, allocate responsibilities, track progress and ensure resources are being used effectively. They ensure that operations in the business run smoothly and efficiently. They will also oversee projects within teams, as well as plan and execute projects.

Project managers also play an important role in communication, problem solving, and risk management. They help keep team members and key decision makers informed about progress and address problems that could affect projects. They monitor costs, maintain standards, and help the team respond to unexpected challenges.

Overall, project managers provide the leadership and coordination needed to achieve project objectives successfully.

Skills needed

Becoming a project manager means having or learning skills that support the business as well as the individual. These skills include:

  • Leadership
  • Strong communication
  • Conflict resolution
  • Adaptability
  • Risk management
  • Budget management
  • Data analysing

These skills can be attained and learnt through appropriate training and learning within the job role. Over time, aspiring project managers will build on these essential skills and become confident leaders who can run projects.

How to become a project manager
