Skills Your Procurement Professionals Will Need In 2027

Supply Chain is playing a more important role than ever. As businesses prepare for 2027, they need to be aware of the skills needed to manage suppliers and maintain reliable supply chains are evolving.

Does your procurement team have the skills needed to keep up? And if there is room for growth, do you know how you can nurture this development?

The 7 Essential Procurement Skills

Strong supplier relationships are at the heart of effective procurement. Building reliable partnerships helps businesses maintain consistent service, improve communication and ensure suppliers are meeting expectations.

Procurement professionals need to understand how to manage supplier performance, resolve issues and maintain positive working relationships. Developing these skills can help businesses negotiate better terms, reduce delays and establish more reliable supply chains.

Digital systems, purchasing data and AI tools are becoming increasingly important in procurement. Employees need the confidence to use these technologies effectively and understand how the information they provide can support better business decisions.

From analysing purchasing trends to identifying opportunities for cost savings, strong digital procurement skills can help businesses improve efficiency and make more informed decisions.

As technology continues to develop, employers should consider how they can support their procurement teams in adapting to new systems and ways of working.

Understanding budgets, purchasing costs and overall value is essential for procurement professionals. Employees need to recognise how their purchasing decisions affect business profitability and wider commercial objectives.

Strong commercial awareness goes beyond finding the lowest price. It involves evaluating quality, reliability, supplier performance and long term value when making purchasing decisions.

By developing these skills, procurement teams can identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary spending, manage budgets more effectively and contribute to the financial performance of the business.

Supply chain disruptions can affect everything from product availability to customer satisfaction. Whether caused by supplier difficulties, unexpected costs or delivery delays, businesses need employees who can recognise potential risks and respond effectively.

Procurement professionals should be able to assess supplier reliability, identify vulnerabilities and develop alternative approaches when challenges arise. Strengthening risk management skills can help businesses minimise disruption, maintain continuity and build more resilient supply chains.

Effective communication plays an important role in maintaining supplier relationships and securing value for a business.

Procurement professionals regularly communicate with suppliers, internal departments and other stakeholders. They need to clearly explain purchasing requirements, manage expectations and negotiate agreements that support business objectives.

Developing negotiation skills can help employees secure favourable purchasing terms, resolve disagreements and build stronger commercial relationships.

Sustainability and responsible sourcing are becoming increasingly important considerations in purchasing decisions. Businesses need to understand where their products and materials come from, how suppliers operate and the potential environmental and ethical impact of their supply chains.

Procurement professionals should be able to assess suppliers against relevant sustainability standards, recognise ethical sourcing risks and consider environmental factors alongside cost and quality.

Developing these skills can help employers make more responsible purchasing decisions, meet customer expectations and support their wider sustainability commitments.

Procurement professionals need to understand how their decisions contribute to wider business goals. From managing unexpected supplier issues to identifying opportunities for improvement, strong problem-solving skills are essential.

Employees who can evaluate different options, anticipate challenges and make informed decisions can support more efficient purchasing processes and stronger supply chain performance.

Developing strategic thinking also helps procurement professionals take on greater responsibility, contribute to business planning and progress into more senior roles.

What happens when businesses have procurement skills gap?

  • Supplier delays and inconsistent service
  • Missed cost saving opportunities
  • Poor forecasting and stock availability
  • Increased commercial and operational risk
  • Overreliance on experienced employees and succession challenges

These are some of the things that can happen when the skills needed are not there. So, addressing these skills gap early will help to build a more resilient team. When you improve purchasing decisions, the reliance on external recruitment will shrink.
