5 Things you must know before starting an Apprenticeship for learners

You might be considering an Apprenticeship, but you could be apprehensive about taking the leap and enrolling onto a programme. But, if you know the course you’d like to do, and you have an employer and line manager who will train you throughout your course, then here are five things you must know before starting an Apprenticeship.

Asking questions is expected

When you are completing a course, you will naturally have questions about some of the core competencies you will cover. No different to learning something new, you will either build on your current skillsets or attain new skills to help you progress within your career. Ask as many questions as you can. This is the prime time to get as much clarity as possible.

You learn much more outside the classroom

Apprenticeships consist of 80% on the job, and 20% off the job training. Off-the job training is completed in either a classroom or another particular setting. But you’d be surprised as to how much learning you will get out of the classroom, and within your job.

Methods such as shadowing within your job role and taking on tasks help you understand what is expected from you within your job role. This builds your confidence, helps you attain your knowledge, skills & behaviours (KSBs) and furthers your experience.

Soft skills matter just as much as the qualifications

Also known as “essential skills” these are paramount for everyone. These include communication, adaptability, teamwork and any other skills which are essential in the workplace and beyond.

The matter of fact is that these skills are vital and go in hand with the advanced abilities you will attain. If you can harness essential skills appropriately, you will find your training to be swift.

Progress isn’t linear

While you will have a structured roadmap as to how you will progress within your Apprenticeship, it won’t always be as straight forward.

Training sessions might be altered, and your training at work in general could differ, depending on what you expected.

But this is okay, as long as you can see progression within your job role, and you are feeling confident throughout your programme, then you don’t need to worry if you’re not covering your competencies “in the right order”.

It’s okay if your Apprenticeship isn’t what you expected

It can be difficult to imagine what an Apprenticeship looks like or is. The reality is that for each person, the expectations can differ.

Training can be different, depending on the sector you work in, or the Apprenticeship qualification level you are achieving. Everything you do could be unlike what you were thinking you would be doing.

As long as you are making progress, and you can see that you are progressing as you’d like to, then that is okay. Furthering this, you can always ask your trainer or line manager to check if you are on track. Sometimes, you need positive reinforcement to give you peace of mind.
