Leadership Apprenticeships Have Changed: How Can Employers Develop Future Leaders?

Leadership development matters.

The apprenticeship landscape may have changed, but the need to develop your next generation of leaders has not. As the government announced the defunding of several apprenticeship standards, this included some leadership orientated programmes. This was to focus on the training and development of young people not in education, employment or training (NEETs).

But the need for confident supervisors, team leaders and managers has not disappeared. Therefore, employers need another way to offer professional development for their key decision makers.
Fareport is now combining role specific apprenticeship development with practical leadership skills.

Your future leaders might already be in your business

Leaders, managers and project heads don’t just appear. They are trained over time, build confidence and skills to support them in a management role. Industries need people who:

  • Colleagues can naturally turn to for support
  • Take ownership when problems arise
  • Helps others improve
  • Confidently communicate with different people
  • Are ready to take greater responsibility
  • Show potential to supervise or coordinate others

Develop leadership skills within the employee's existing role

Leadership development does not necessarily need to sit separately from someone’s occupational development. In fact, our enhanced leadership element pathways introduce the idea of anyone showing true leadership qualities to gain the training and development they deserve.

Through the completion of apprenticeship training with leadership elements, this allows employees to complete an apprenticeship relevant to their current role while developing practical leadership skills alongside it.

Leadership Fundamentals

Self-awareness, emotional intelligence, leadership approaches and leading by example.

Managing and supporting others

Motivation, accountability, team culture and supporting colleagues.

Coaching and feedback

Helping others develop and having effective development conversations.

Conflict and difficult conversations

Handling challenging situations professionally and confidently.

Performance

Understanding expectations and supporting individual and team improvement.

Decision making and problem solving

Taking ownership, identifying root causes and making informed decisions.

Leading change

Communicating change, developing resilience and helping others adapt.

Three apprenticeship pathways for developing future leaders

Customer Service Specialist Level 3 with a Leadership Focus

This programme is suitable for experienced customer service professionals, including those working within retail, who are ready to take greater ownership and support others.

The leadership elements are applied specifically to their role through:

  • Leading by example in customer service
  • Supporting colleagues
  • Managing challenging conversations and conflict
  • Coaching and providing feedback
  • Understanding performance
  • Solving operational problems
  • Supporting teams through change

Business Administrator Level 3 with a Leadership Focus

This orientates around employees who are becoming increasingly responsible for coordinating activity, supporting colleagues and solving operational problems.

Leadership development can cover:

  • Building confidence and self-awareness
  • Motivating and supporting others
  • Managing difficult conversations
  • Coaching colleagues
  • Supporting performance
  • Workplace decision making
  • Leading through change

HR Support Level 3 with a Leadership Focus

This one gives you a slightly different angle because leadership does not necessarily mean directly managing people.

You can in fact develop HR employees who can:

  • Build credibility with managers
  • Influence without formal authority
  • Navigate difficult conversations
  • Coach and support colleagues
  • Support performance and accountability
  • Use evidence to make informed decisions
  • Support workplace change

Leadership development that applies directly to the workplace

Your employee who is learning about leadership and training can apply any of these skills when supporting a colleague. Someone developing conflict management skills can use them when navigating a difficult customer or workplace conversation.

An employee learning about performance can better understand expectations, accountability and how they can support others to improve. Someone learning about change can become more confident helping colleagues adapt when processes, systems or priorities change.

Who could benefit from these leadership elements?

Consider employees who are:

  • Taking on more responsibility
  • Supporting or mentoring colleagues
  • Showing potential to supervise others
  • Becoming a point of contact within their team
  • Handling more complex problems
  • Working closely with managers
  • Looking for their next progression opportunity

Someone who is taking on a more leadership orientated role do not need “manager” in their job title. These additional elements are to grow anyone who has the qualities of a leader.
