How much do Teaching Assistants make?

Teaching assistants are an essential part in schools and education. Acting as one of the first lines of contact for students, Teaching Assistants (TA) help support classroom teachers to help educate their students, manage behaviours and prepare for activities.

But some schools and education premises may be wondering how much to pay a Teaching Assistant, or yourself could be wondering about training and upskilling as a TA, but want to know how much you could earn, and what you’d be expected to do within your job role.

How much does a Teaching Assistant earn?

As of August 2026, Indeed list that the average Teaching Assistant in the UK earns approximately £25,420 annually. Of course, this depends on the qualifications and experience of the individual.

If you are completing a Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship, you will most likely start on the minimum apprentice wage, depending on your age, if you have been employed by the business prior to looking at the apprenticeship programme, and the wage the employer has decided to offer.

After training and gaining your qualification, you could potentially see a pay increase (this is still depending on the business and salary you are currently on) or provided the option to train further, depending on the requirements of the business and the individual.

Why this role is essential in education?

TAs are essential in schools and education. They help reduce the workload of the teacher, as well as support them for all types of learning and activities. They also help give personalised one-to-one support for students who may be struggling or have extra challenges.

Teaching assistants are able to work more closely with smaller groups of children, enabling them to build strong professional relationships with students and provide targeted, individualised support within the school environment. With more diverse pupils in classrooms, it is more important than ever to provide the additional teaching support, so no student is left behind.

Becoming a Teaching Assistant is an essential stepping stone in the education sector, and it is vital that all individuals can attain the training and skills to build their competence.
