Overview

The Teaching Assistant Level 3 Apprenticeship is for individuals who want to play a vital role in supporting learners within schools and educational settings. This programme develops the knowledge, skills, and behaviours (KSBs) needed to work effectively alongside teachers to support pupils across a range of ages and abilities, including those with special educational needs and disabilities, social, emotional, and mental health needs, and learners requiring additional support. Apprentices will gain practical experience in delivering individual and small group interventions, adapting learning activities, promoting positive behaviour, and supporting pupils to remain engaged, motivated, and confident in the classroom. This programme also reinforces the importance of safeguarding, equality, inclusion, online safety, as well as maintaining professional relationships with pupils, parents, carers, and education professionals.

Throughout the apprenticeship, learners will build a strong understanding of child development, communication strategies, assessment support, and classroom practice within primary, secondary, special school, and further education environments. Apprentices will learn how to contribute to lesson planning, support literacy and numeracy development, encourage independent learning behaviours, and create safe, stimulating learning environments that help pupils thrive academically and personally.

Standard and Level:Teaching Assistant Level 3 Standard
Entry requirements:

Candidates should already be working within a teaching assistant job role. They could also be working as a Learning Support Assistant, Learning Support Worker, or Specialist Cirriculum Support. Employers may also provide additional entry criteria.

Learners aged 18 who do not have exemptions will still be required to achieve Level 2 Functional Skills.
Learners over 19 will have the option to either opt in or out of Functional Skills training and examinations. For those who choose to opt out, Fareport remains committed to supporting all learners in developing their literacy and numeracy skills by embedding these essential topics within the curriculum and assessments of the apprenticeship.

To be eligible for an Apprenticeship you (or the apprentice) must:

  • Be living and working in England
  • Be 16 years old or above
  • Have the legal right to work in the UK
  • Have maintained UK residency for the last 3 years
  • Be employed in a real job; they may be an existing employee or a new hire
  • Work towards achieving an approved apprenticeship standard or framework
  • Work at least 30 hours a week
  • Be able to commit to the apprenticeship and its requirements
  • Not hold a prior qualification at the same or higher level in the same subject area
  • Not undertake or benefit from DfE funding during their apprenticeship programme, including Student Loans.
  • Have apprenticeship training and employment that lasts at least 12 months.
Cost:Fully funded through the Apprenticeship Levy or 95% government-funded for eligible employers, with minimal contribution required.

Knowledge


Knowledge (K) – The theoretical understanding an apprentice needs to perform their role effectively. This includes industry-specific principles, regulations, and best practices.

  • K1: The importance of providing feedback.
  • K2: The learning resources available to support learners and how to use them.
  • K3: The stages of development for children and young people.
  • K4: The principles of target setting to support the next steps in learning.
  • K5: The impact of transition on learners and strategies to support them.
  • K6: How technology can support learning.
  • K7: The learning, assessment, and feedback cycle.
  • K8: Methods of formative assessment.
  • K9: Methods of observing, recording, and reporting.
  • K10: The curriculum intent, how it is implemented, and the intended impact.
  • K11: Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety legislation, guidance, and procedures.
  • K12: Teaching strategies to deliver learning activities and interventions (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • K13: How to adapt communication strategies to suit the audience and context.
  • K14: Types of learning intervention.
  • K15: How to support learner’s well-being, mental health and pastoral needs, including referral to other professionals or services.
  • K16: The pastoral and academic behaviours learners will display.
  • K17: The impact of enrichment activities on learners.

Skills


Skills (S) – The practical abilities developed through training and hands-on experience. These are the technical and transferable skills required for the job.

  • S1: Apply strategies to support and encourage the development of independent learners.
  • S2: Adapt communication strategies for the audience and context.
  • S3: Apply behaviour management strategies in line with organisational policy.
  • S4: Adapt resources to support all learners.
  • S5: Communicate with teachers to ensure clarity of the TA’s role.
  • S6: Apply teaching strategies to deliver learning activities or interventions.
  • S7: Build relationships with learners, teachers, other professionals and stakeholders.
  • S8: Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
  • S9: Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • S10: Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • S11: Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • S12: Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • S13: Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • S14: Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • S15: Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • S16: Provide feedback to learners.

Behaviours


Behaviours (B) – The professional attitudes and values expected in the workplace. These include teamwork, adaptability, problem-solving, and ethical responsibility.

  • B1: Act professionally and respectfully with the whole school community.
  • B2: Be a positive role model, upholding and exemplifying the organisation’s values.
  • B3: Respect and promote equality, diversity, and inclusion.
  • B4: Be committed to improving their own delivery through reflective practice.
  • B5: Engage with research to establish best practice.
  • B6: Work collaboratively and constructively with the whole school community.

End point assessment or “EPA” has been created to assess the knowledge, skills and behaviours gained throughout the qualification. EPA is conducted by an external independent body chosen by the employer.

EPA offers the chance to showcase your skills and be awarded a grade that reflects your performance.

EPA will consist of two different assesment methods:

Assesment method 1– observation with questions
Assesment method 2– Professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence

Both these methods will be marked as:

  • Fail
  • Pass
  • Distinction

The result of both these assesment methods combined will then decide the overall grade. The grades avaiable are:

  • Fail
  • Pass
  • Merit
  • Distinction
