 8. Frequently Asked Questions

Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQ) are Level 4 and 5 qualifications that bridge the gap between A/T Levels and degree programs. Developed collaboratively with awarding bodies, employers, and businesses, these qualifications are tailored to provide learners with the targeted training, knowledge, and skills required for their career paths. HTQs are intended to be pursued as standalone qualifications, offering an alternative to apprenticeships, rather than being part of an apprenticeship scheme.

To enrol in a course, you must fulfil the entry criteria established by the institution. These requirements differ, but typically include having specific GCSEs or A levels at particular grades, and occasionally in specified subjects. Additionally, qualifications such as BTECs, T levels, and various other Level 3 qualifications are commonly accepted by many institutions, many of which also utilize the UCAS Tariff system.

Depending on the subject area, you may have various options for how you undertake your studies. Besides the possibility of studying for a Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) full-time, you can also choose from part-time, online, or other flexible study methods. For instance, many courses are available through distance learning.

If you choose to pursue an HTQ as a standalone qualification, you will need to pay tuition fees, which can range from approximately £7,000 to £9,250 per year for courses lasting one or two years.

You might be eligible for government-supported tuition fee and maintenance loans through Student Finance England. Additionally, scholarships, bursaries, or grants could be available to those who meet specific criteria. More information about these financial supports can be found on the UCAS website, and it's also advisable to inquire with HTQ providers about any special funding opportunities. In certain cases, you may qualify for funding through an Advanced Learner Loan.

Starting from the academic year 2023/24, the government will expand access to student loans to include part-time HTQ students. If you are employed, your employer might also offer support for obtaining an HTQ.

Navigating student funding can be complex, so it's crucial to seek the most current information and advice.
