Shane completed our Solent Marine Electrician Skills Bootcamp delivered in collaboration with the Solent Growth Partnership and the British Maritime Training & Assessment (BMTA).

Before the course my electrical knowledge was limited and I went into it feeling nervous, but from the first day I was made to feel at ease and felt like I was in good hands…(Even if Owen is a Bournemouth FC fan!!)

What is the most important thing you have learnt during the Skills Bootcamp?

Every single topic was hugely beneficial to me, however learning about digital switching, electrical mathematics and going over electrical diagrams in depth has been massively helpful. Coming from a boatbuilding background I had some previous practical knowledge but my theory was lacking, and since completing the course I am more confident and have a much better understanding on how various marine electrical circuits work, AC & DC systems and engine wiring which has helped me within my current job.

How did the Bootcamp or trainer support you to develop your skills?

Owen, Richard and Brian were brilliant. All three are extremely knowledgeable, helpful and were extremely patient with me on areas that I was struggling with. They always went into depth with their answers for any questions that I had. Their teaching styles worked perfectly with me as it was the ideal balance of online and in person practical sessions. Although there were a lot of topics squeezed in to the 10 week time frame it didn’t feel rushed or bloated with the amount of information they were giving me and I ended up walking away with a huge amount of knowledge and experience gained. All three of them made the 10 week course feel like it was only a few days as they made the 10 weeks fun and humorous, something that I was looking forward to every week.

How has the Bootcamp helped you in your current role, a new job, or career goals?

The bootcamp has helped me progress within my current role by giving me a wider understanding of how our hybrid systems work. Within the first week of completing the course I was given the job of wiring up a new test rig we have in our workshop, and from one of the topics covered (Engine wiring & systems) I was able to read back through my notes and access the power-point to support me through the job. Before I would have not have felt competent enough to do so!

What advice would you give to someone considering the Marine Electrician Skills Bootcamp?

I would say don’t panic with how much information there is given to you, you always have the chance to rewatch or re-read the power points after the online sessions.
