What is the End-Point-Assessment?

When an employee is enrolled onto an Apprenticeship with Fareport, they will be shown their Apprenticeship path. One part covered includes the End-Point Assessment. But what can the apprentice expect during the final stage? Today, we will cover what is included, components that will be covered, and how your final grade is calculated.

What is the End-Point Assessment?

The End-Point Assessment is the final stage of the employees Apprenticeship. Completed after the Gateway, an assessment will be conducted to determine the apprentices knowledge, skills, and behaviours (KSBs) covered throughout their training by their apprenticeship standard.

EPA components

This can include a multiple-choice exam.

Practical assessment (e.g. observation of work)

The apprentice will be required to carry out certain duties related to their qualification. This can range depending on the Apprenticeship category you are completing.

Professional discussion

This is normally the final part of your EPA. Conducted by an End-point assessment organisation (EPAO) to mitigate bias, you will be given the opportunity to explain aspects of your portfolio and provide reasoning to your decisions within your workplace.

This will in the form of an informal chat, so it is not daunting for the employee.

Project or presentation

During your EPA, you will complete a standalone project which will cover the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) you covered in your Apprenticeship.

During this project, this will help the apprentice demonstrate problem solving skills, planning and application of knowledge.

Again, this depends on the Apprenticeship you are completing.

Portfolio of evidence

This is a collection of work-based evidence which demonstrate the KSBs you covered. This will also include your completed training hours log

You must be aware that not every EPA will include all of these criteria. It depends on the specific Apprenticeship being completed and the requirements within.

Grading

Once you complete the EPA, you will await final grading from your trainer. At the end of the Apprenticeship, once the EPA is completed, the apprentice receives an overall grade. The grading system is designed to reflect how well the apprentice has demonstrated the KSBs required by their Apprenticeship standard.

How the Final Grade is Calculated:

The final grade is based on how the apprentice performs across all components of the EPA. Each component of the whole Apprenticeship is usually individually graded, with A grading matrix in the Apprenticeship’s assessment plan explains how these combine into the final grade.

This is set out as:

Pass

A pass grade means the apprentice met the required standard across all EPA components. They are deemed competent in their role.

Merit

The merit grade means the apprentice went above the basic requirements in some or all areas, showing strong understanding and consistent performance.

Distinction

Finally, a distinction means the individual has showed exceptional performance across all components and demonstrated deep knowledge, high-level skills, and professionalism.

What Happens After Grading?

As a result of your EPA, The EPAO will submit the final result to the Apprenticeship certification body. If successful, the apprentice receives:

  • An EPA certificate
  • Their official Apprenticeship Completion Certificate from the Institute for Apprenticeships & Technical Education (IfATE).
