What is an Apprenticeship standard?

We have discussed in detail what Apprenticeships are, how to enrol your staff and the benefits of an Apprenticeship. But we haven’t discussed what an Apprenticeship standard is. You may have heard this term being used before. But it is all well and good throwing around the term when someone might not know what is means. So, let’s dive in.

What is an Apprenticeship standard?

An approved Apprenticeship standard can be described as a nationally recognised roadmap, designed for a learner to cover a “checklist” of training, work, and competencies which make up the whole Apprenticeship standard.

Apprenticeship standards are paramount to showing the examiner and employer that the employee can confidently say that are competent to complete their job role in line with the Apprenticeship course they are completing.

Are all standards the same?

Like Apprenticeship levels, no two standards will be the same. The standard will differ as to the course. Depending on your Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) Fareport will tailor your course to fit your current learning requirements.

The standard is in line with the Apprenticeship model being conducted with other training providers. This means that two Apprenticeship providers will be approved to offer the same course, at the same level, which will have the same standard.

Can the standard be changed?

While RPL can influence what you must and don’t need to complete, the Apprenticeship standard is a Government approved training roadmap, so this can’t be changed.

As a Government outlined qualification, the standard must mirror the competencies which are covered throughout the course.

How do I find out my apprentices’ standard?

Typically the training provider will supply the standard, but Skills England have a catalogue of standards set for each Apprenticeship course.

Through the Skills England website and each standard, you can find the following:

  • Occupational Summary
  • Typical job titles around the specific Apprenticeship
  • Occupation duties- these are in line with your Knowledge, Skills & Behaviours (KSBs) which must be covered throughout your Apprenticeship course- These will be sectioned out in “Duties”, making up your Apprenticeship Standard

Other information, such as the course level & duration can be found within the standard. This information can also be found on the training provider’s dedicated Apprenticeship pages, such as Fareport’s individual courses.

The requirements outlined in the standard will also apply to the employee’s on-the-job training, and off-the-job training, as well as their guided learning hours.

Guided learning relates to any training designed to achieve the clear and specific outcomes, contributing directly to the successful achievement of the Apprenticeship framework.

Apprenticeship Resources

In relation to the standard, Fareport other additional resources to help you or your employee cover all the topics related to your Apprenticeship.

When completing an Apprenticeship, all employees will have a dedicated trainer that will train and support them throughout the theoretical training aspect of the course.

Through their expert training and Apprenticeship knowledge, they will ensure that all duties & KSBs in the standard are met before the apprentice enters their Gateway and End Point Assessment (EPA).
