What does Gateway mean?

As an employer who has an apprentice or is planning to enrol an employee onto an Apprenticeship, there will be some phrases used that you might not understand. One of these phrases is Gateway.

Here, you will find out what Gateway means, and how is affects you as an employer.

What is a Gateway?

Gateway is the term used to describe the transition point between the apprentice completing their training and preparing for their End-Point-Assessment (EPA). Think of Gateway as the “ready check” moment. It’s the point where the apprentice wraps up all their training and gets the green light to take their EPA.

You can enter Gateway when you have spent a minimum of 8 months on your Apprenticeship course, and completed all required off-the-job & on-the-job training.

During this time, the apprentice, the employer and the training provider will determine if all the criteria has been met so the apprentice can move on to complete their EPA. The EPA is conducted by an external organisation.

The Gateway requirements will include:

  • The apprentice’s portfolio showing their evidence of work in conjunction with their Apprenticeship
  • An evidence tracker that shows the knowledge, skills and behaviours that have been covered within your portfolio
  • A signed Gateway declaration
  • Proof of Maths & English qualifications (if applicable)
  • Completed on-program qualifications (if applicable)
  • Gateway requirements change depending on the Apprenticeship type and course you are completing, so no two gateways are the same.

What do Fareport do?

At this stage, Fareport plays a key supporting role. We work alongside the apprentice and their employer to make sure everything’s in place for a successful Gateway and to make sure the apprentice is happy to enter the final stage of their course. Think of us as the final pit crew before the apprentice hits the track for their EPA.

We make sure all the evidence is submitted, offer guidance on what’s expected in the final assessment, and keep things moving so there are no delays.

What do employers need to do?

During this transition period, the employer and the training provider help the apprentice prepare for their EPA. As the employer, your role is super important during Gateway. Here’s how you can support your apprentice:

  • Review their work and help them reflect on what they’ve achieved.
  • Stay in touch with Fareport. We will guide you on what needs to happen and when.
  • Encourage confidence in your apprentice. this is a big moment for them, and your encouragement can go a long way.
  • Be ready for the next steps, including prepping your team for any support needed during the EPA itself.

Ensure you are Gateway ready

Gateway is a milestone check before finalising the end of the Apprenticeship. This is a pivotal moment to stop, take stock, and say, “I’m ready.” Whether you’re the apprentice, the employer, or the training provider, it’s a team moment that sets the stage for the final challenge. And if you’ve done it right? Success is just around the corner.
