UK Apprenticeship Funding Cuts 2026: What Employers Need to Know

The Government announced a number of Apprenticeship standards are being defunded in September 2026. We will discuss whch standards these will be, and what you can do as an employer, learner, or young individual.

This month, we have received news of 16 Apprenticeship standards being defunded. This has come months after the funding for Level 7 Apprenticeships only being available for under 21-year-olds came into effect.

With new funding costs, restrictions on degree-level Apprenticeships and alterations in programme durations, it’s no wonder training providers, employers, and individuals have been waiting for more news and updates from the government regarding Apprenticeships.

Which Apprenticeship standards are being defunded in 2026?

The government has confirmed that the following Apprenticeships will no longer receive funding from September 2026. The Apprenticeships being defunded are:

  • Team Leader Level 3
  • Operations Manager Level 5
  • Coaching Professional Level 5
  • Chartered Manager Level 6
  • Lead Practitioner in Adult Care Level 4
  • Improvement Practitioner Level 4
  • Security First Line Manager Level 3
  • Learning and Skills Mentor Level 4
  • Cleaning Hygiene Operative Level 2
  • Learning and Skills Assessor Level 3
  • Custody and Detention Professional Level 3
  • Professional Security Operative Level 2
  • Improvement Leader Level 6
  • Public Sector Compliance Investigator & Officer Level 3
  • Outdoor Learning Specialist Level 5

Apprentices of these current programmes will be able to complete their training as planned. The change is less about removing training options and more about redefining how public funding can be used.

Instead of looking at building your current managers, look at supporting your assistants and entry level roles. By providing opportunities for the young people now, you will help support your current and future business growth. By investing in today, you will be creating a culture of skills development and career growth in which your business will benefit from in the future.

These changes point to a clear shift in the role of Apprenticeships. They are increasingly being positioned as a tool for workforce entry and core skills development, rather than a broad solution for ongoing professional training.

This means that from September 2026, businesses will have to self-fund these standards, instead of using the Apprenticeship levy or government funding. Bringing forward enrolment now can allow you to use existing levy funding while it’s still available and businesses will still be able to access this programme before funding is removed.

It’s worth considering early enrolment if:

  • You already planned to run leadership or management programmes
  • The Apprenticeship clearly supports a current business need
  • You have levy funds that would otherwise expire

In these cases, enrolling now can be a practical way to maximise funding before it’s withdrawn.

What does this mean for employers? And what should you be doing in the coming months?

While this may strengthen alignment with economic priorities, it also places employers in a more strategic position, and this means the bigger need to support these young people through training and development is paramount.

The government are planning to tackle the number of young people not in employment, education or training (also known as NEETs) so there is a more direct need to support these individuals with more accessible levels of Apprenticeship programmes.
