Enrolling an employee onto an Apprenticeship is a fantastic way to grow your teams’ skillsets while developing talent in your business. One of the many questions employers ask is “How much do I need to pay an apprentice?”
As an employer, you are required to pay an apprentice according to their contract of employment. The amount depends on their age, role, and how long they’ve been on their Apprenticeship.
Below, we’ll break down the wage requirements, working hours, and other entitlements.
Apprentice Wages by Age and Stage
The pay rate for apprentices is set by the National Minimum Wage (NMW) and National Living Wage (NLW).
- Aged 16–18: minimum £7.55 per hour
- Aged 19 or over in their first year: minimum £7.55 per hour
- Aged 19 or over and completed the first year: must be paid the correct NMW or NLW for their age group
From 1 April 2025, the updated rates are:
- 18–20 years old: £8.60 per hour
- 21 and over: £11.44 per hour (National Living Wage)
If an employee is already earning more than the Apprenticeship minimum when they start their course, you cannot reduce their pay.
Apprentice’s will be paid weekly or monthly, depending on the company’s policy. This is also within the employment contract.
In some cases, when the apprentice achieves their qualification and completes their course, they see a pay increase. This is because they are technically no longer in training. However, the employer could also suggest another Apprenticeship course for the employee if they believe there is more room to upskill.
When an apprentice is paid
Your employee must be paid:
- During working hours
- During training that is a part of the Apprenticeship (at least 20% of your normal working hours, commonly referred to as “off-the-job training”
- Study towards your functional skills qualifications (if it’s a part of your Apprenticeship)
As part of their Apprenticeship, the apprentice must work a minimum of 30 hours per week.
Do apprentice’s get holiday entitlement?
Just like other employees, apprentices are entitled to:
- At least 20 days’ paid holiday per year (plus bank holidays)
- Statutory sick pay and other basic employment rights
This ensures that apprentices are treated fairly and consistently with other staff, regardless of their current position in the company.
Ready to enrol your team?
Apprenticeships are an affordable and impactful way for businesses to build highly skilled teams. But it’s also just as important to understand the pay requirements. Employers must ensure all employees on an Apprenticeship are paid at least the legal minimum for their age and stage of training, while also recognising that apprentices are entitled to the same rights as other employees, including holiday and sick pay.
By paying your apprentice fairly, you stay compliant while creating a positive working environment where apprentices can learn and thrive. In turn, your business benefits from fresh talent, government funding support, and the opportunity to shape a future workforce that grows with you.
