In most cases, yes, you do need a level of Maths and English to complete an Apprenticeship. Here’s how it works:
Some Apprenticeships will ask for GCSEs in Maths and English. The requirement is often grade 4/C or above.
If you don’t already have a pass in GCSE Maths and English, you’ll usually need to study for Functional Skills in Maths and English alongside your Apprenticeship.
However, since February 2025, any apprentice over 19 years old does not need to achieve functional skills if they choose not to. Apprentices 16-18 are still required to do functional skills training if they haven’t met the grade requirement.
Achievement requirements for anyone completing functional skills
To successfully finish your Apprenticeship and achieve your qualification, you typically must achieve at least Level 2 in Functional Skills Maths and English. This is equivalent to GCSE grade 4/C.
So, you can start an Apprenticeship without those qualifications, but you’ll need to achieve them during your training if you haven’t already.
In the case of Level 2 Apprenticeships, no formal qualifications are often required. Although you must be work towards Maths & English qualifications if you don’t already have them.
As a level 3 is equivalent to an A-level qualification, this usually requires some GCSE passes which include Maths & English. If you don’t have these and are between 16-18, you must achieve them in order to successfully complete your apprenticeship.
These Apprenticeship programmes require a level of prior learning/academic achievements such as A-levels qualifications, Level 3 qualifications, or relevant work experience, plus GCSE Maths & English.
