Building Confidence with Functional Skills English

When completing an Apprenticeship, you will find out whether or not functional skills English training is required.

Today, we will discuss how you can build your confidence in English through our Apprenticeships, and how we support all learners to achieve the best possible training outcome.

Many people carry negative experiences of English from school into adulthood. Whether it was struggling with spelling, grammar, or writing essays under pressure, these experiences can shape how we feel about using English in learning or at work.

This can sometimes lead to a lack of confidence or the feeling that improving English skills is difficult or out of reach.

But the truth is that English skills are something we use every day, often without realising it.

From sending emails and reading instructions to communicating with colleagues or writing reports, English plays a vital role in both work and everyday life.

Functional Skills English is designed to help learners build these essential skills in a practical and supportive way.

What Might Be Holding You Back?

If you’ve ever felt unsure about improving your English skills, you’re not alone. Many learners share similar thoughts, such as:

  • It reminds me of school
  • I’m not very good at spelling or grammar
  • I find writing difficult
  • I don’t enjoy reading
  • It’s not part of my main apprenticeship subject

These feelings are common, but they don’t have to define your future progress. Functional Skills English focuses on real-life communication, helping learners develop the confidence and ability to use English effectively in everyday situations.

What is Functional Skills English?

Functional Skills English is a qualification designed to develop practical communication skills for life, learning, and work. The qualification focuses on three key areas: Reading; writing; speaking.

Reading

Learners must understand written information and be able to interpret its meaning.

Writing

A learner must produce clear, accurate written communication such as emails, messages, and short reports.

Speaking, Listening and Communicating

A learner must be able to take part in discussions and engaging with others effectively.

These skills are designed to be relevant and useful in real-world situations, helping learners build confidence in everyday communication.

Functional Skills English and Apprenticeships

For Apprenticeships, learners are required to achieve Functional Skills Maths and Functional Skills English at Level 1 or Level 2 if they do not already hold an equivalent GCSE qualification.

Developing these skills not only supports Apprenticeship completion but also strengthens the communication skills needed in the workplace.

With the right support and guidance, many learners find that Functional Skills English is far more approachable than they expected.

Why English Skills Matter

Strong English skills support several aspects of daily life and work. Through these skills, they allow us to communicate clearly with colleagues, customers, and employers, helping to avoid misunderstandings and build professional relationships. Being confident in reading also helps us understand important information, instructions, and workplace documents effectively.

As writing is another key part of everyday communication, it is vital to be able to write coherently. From sending emails to completing reports or messages, clear and professional communications can make a significant difference in the workplace. English skills also help individuals express their ideas and opinions with confidence, whether in discussions, meetings, or presentations. Anyone improving your English skills can open up new opportunities and support long-term development.
