Apprentice Minimum Wage increasing for 2022/23

Discover everything you need to know below — from key insights to helpful tips that make a difference.

Why Paying Above the Minimum Wage for Apprentices Matters

The Low Pay Commission and campaigns such as Back the Future have highlighted how the current apprenticeship wage can act as a barrier to entry for many people. It can prevent talented individuals from taking up an apprenticeship simply because they cannot afford a temporary drop in income—even when the long-term benefits are clear. Low wages create an inequality that limits social mobility and access to opportunity.

At Fareport, we always encourage employers to advertise apprenticeship opportunities at a rate above the Apprentice Minimum Wage. Doing so not only improves the quality and number of applicants, but also significantly increases the likelihood that apprentices will remain committed to the programme and successfully complete it.

The Reality in the Current Job Market

The job market remains highly competitive, particularly in the South of England. Apprenticeship vacancies that offer only the minimum wage often receive few or no applications. In today’s economy, many candidates simply can’t afford to live on apprentice wages and will opt for better-paid roles without training. As inflation and the cost of living continue to rise, this problem will only become more urgent.

Employers naturally expect dedication, productivity, and professionalism from their new hires. To meet these expectations, it makes sense to offer a fair and competitive salary—ideally in line with similar entry-level roles in the business.

Fair Pay Means Better Outcomes

Offering a fair wage provides apprentices with a decent standard of living, easing financial pressures and enabling them to focus on their learning and performance. It also reduces the likelihood of them leaving the programme early due to financial stress or alternative job offers.

The best employers invest in their apprentices for the long term, recognising that they’re developing skilled and loyal team members who can grow within the business.
