What is an Apprenticeship?
An Apprenticeship is a formal qualification for employed individuals based around the relevant Qualifications & Credit Framework (QCF) for each sector. The Apprenticeship is awarded on the achievement of the qualification, a technical certificate which recognises the knowledge an individual needs to work in their chosen industry and Functional Maths and English Skills. (Childcare and Commercial frameworks now include I.C.T.) In addition each Apprentice will also complete a workbook on their employment rights and responsibilities to help them become a more valuable employee.
Apprenticeships can be completed by existing staff who want to recognise and develop their skills, or may be someone who has joined the organisation specifically in an apprenticeship role.
There are three levels of Apprenticeship:
Level 2 - Intermediate Level Apprenticeship (G.C.S.E.)
Level 3 - Advanced Level Apprenticeship ('A' - Level)
Level 4 - Higher Level apprenticeship (Degree)
How long does an Apprenticeship last?
On average an Intermediate Apprenticeship at Level 2 will take 1 year and an Advanced Apprenticeship at Level 3 will take 2 years but each programme is planned individually to reflect the needs and abilities of the learner.
Different subjects can also vary the length of programme but employers and learners are fully aware of targets before they commit to the Apprenticeship.
